Monbiot updates book 'Heat', calls for carbon target 'beyond zero emissions'

26 Oct 2007 - 12:00am

Here is a portion of George Monbiot's speech at the Camp for Climate Change in London Aug. 18, '07. He has been studying and writing about global warming for over twenty years and is the Author of "Heat" which is about climate change and what needs to be done about it. He explains that because of recent scientific discoveries the book needs an extreme update, revising his call for 90% emission reductions by 2030 to 110% - 115% reductions by 2030.

US Naval expert predicts summer blue arctic oceans from 2013

7 Oct 2007 - 12:00am

The Arctic ice cap shrank so much this summer that waves briefly lapped along two long-imagined Arctic shipping routes, the Northwest Passage over Canada and the Northern Sea Route over Russia.

Over all, the floating ice dwindled to an extent unparalleled in a century or more, by several estimates.

Zero Emissions to stem extreme Arctic and Antarctic Melting.

22 Sep 2007 - 12:00am

We've heard the stories about the Arctics rapid melt, which could see it ice free by 2020, as opposed to the previously pessimistic assesments that showed this possibly occuring by 2050. Now NASA has released a study that shows a similair situation ioccuring in Antarctica. At the same time we should be aware that a rapid melt of the Arctic circle, will bring warmer water to the pole which is adjacent to Greenland, and cause even more rapid melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

New study shows how solar power can provide 90 percent of the energy needs in the United States

11 Sep 2007 - 12:00am

A Palo Alto start-up called Ausra said Monday that it has raised $40 million to develop, build and operate solar power plants.

The money comes from Silicon Valley venture-capital clean-technology heavyweights, Khosla Ventures and Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers. Both Vinod Khosla and Ray Lane of KPCB are on Ausra's board.

Concentrating On Solar Thermal as a Solution to Climate Change

11 Sep 2007 - 12:00am

Slide 1
(Right, we have slide 1.) Good afternoon everyone again. Look, I’d like to take a bit of your time to tell you a little more about solar thermal power, which is a topic that has been fairly quiet over many years but is just now getting a lot more attention and some of you may know about it and some of you may not but let me tell you a bit more about it. Let’s jump to slide 2. We got slide 2? (yes)

The Choice We Face: Zero Emissions or Permanent Drought

7 Sep 2007 - 12:00am

The Bureau of Meteorology now admits that its rain forecasts earlier this year were optimistic. This is because they were based on the weather of the last 100 years and did not take account of the fact that we are moving into a new climate regime.

Dr Coughlan, of the Bureau, says "we can't predict when this drought will end".

And Ross Young, of the Water Services Association of Australia says we are now moving towards "Permanent drought".

With half of Australia's land in drought and farmers under financial andwater stress, food prices are bound to rise.

George Monbiot calls for Zero Emissions by 2030

31 Aug 2007 - 12:00am

"The only rational approach to dealing with climate change now is to aim for zero carbon emissions by 2030. That's the only means we have of ensuring that greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere remain below the level at which they are bound to cause a climate change catastrophe. A move now towards zero carbon by 2030."

Peter Christoff: I'd now like you to all welcome George and invite his contribution.

Audience applause.
